Shirley Chisholm's Enduring Legacy in Ormond Beach, Florida

Shirley Chisholm's legacy remains vibrant in Ormond Beach, Florida, where she spent her later years and passed away in 2005.

 

Chisholm, born in Brooklyn, shattered barriers as the first African American woman in Congress and the first Black woman to seek a major party’s presidential nomination.

 

The City of Palm Coast, neighboring Ormond Beach, now celebrates every November as Shirley Chisholm Month, coinciding with her centennial.

 

The Shirley Chisholm Trail on Pine Lakes Parkway was upgraded to include interactive educational features honoring her achievements.

 

The Flagler Democratic Women's Club hosted events highlighting her profound impact.

 

Nationally, Chisholm received the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in December 2024, and her inspiring story reached new audiences with the Netflix biopic “Shirley,” starring Regina King.
